Prerequisites

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight student requirements:

  • 17 years of age for Private Rating, 18 years of age for Commercial Rating
  • Read, speak, and understand the English Language
  • All Primary Flight Training certifications require  the student to pass a written exam and an oral  and practical exam administered by a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
Courses

Discovery Flight

 Discovery Flight Requirements:
  • Minors must be accompanied by parent/legal guardian
  • Ground Lesson/Briefing, 20 minute introductory flight with a Certified Flight Instructor

Private Pilot Certification

Dreaming of taking to the skies? Obtaining your Private Pilot's License allows you to fly as a hobby or is the first step to embark on an aviation career.

FAA requirements (minimums):
  • 40 hours of total flight time
  • 20 hours of dual flight instruction
  • 10 hours solo flight training - to include 3 hours of cross-country, 3 hours of night flight, 3 hours of instrument flight time
  • Pass written test
  • Pass oral and practical exam administered by a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)

Commercial Pilot Certification

FAA Commercial requirements (minimums):
  • Must hold a Private Pilot Certificate
  •  Applicable Ground Training
  • 150 hours Total Flight Time to include
    • 100 hours of Pilot-in-Command time (PIC)
    • 35 hours in helicopters (PIC)
    • 10 hours cross-country in helicopters (PIC)
  • 20 hours to include:
    • 5 hours Instrument
    • 2 hours of daytime cross-country that consists of a total straight-line distance of 50 nautical miles
    • 2 hours of nighttime that consists of a total straight-line distance of 50 nautical miles
    • 3 hours flight with authorized flight instructor for test preparation
  • 10 hours solo flight time or 10 hours of flight time as PIC with an authorized instructor on board
    •  One cross-country flight with landings at a minimum of 3 points - one segment must consist of a straight line distance of 50 nautical miles
    • 5 hours in night Visual Flight Rules (VFR) with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings involving flight in traffic-pattern
  • Pass written exam
  • Pass oral and practical exam administered by a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)

Instrument Flight Rating

FAA Instrument Rating requirements:
  • Hold a Private Pilot Certificate or be concurrently applying for a Private Pilot Certificate
  • Ground Instruction from an authorized instructor
  • 50 hours of cross-country as pilot-in-command (PIC), 10 hours must be helicopter
  • 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time - 15 must be with authorized instructor
    • 3 hours of Instrument flight for test prep
    • Cross-country under Instrument flight rules of 100 nautical miles 
    • Instrument approach at each airport
    • 3 different kinds of approaches with use of a navigation system
  • Pass written test
  • Pass oral and practical exam administered by a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)

Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)

FAA Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) Rating requirements:
  • Hold an Commercial Flight Certificate (in applicable category - helicopter or airplane) or  hold an Airline Transport Pilot certificate 
  • Hold an Instrument Rating
  • Hold an Flight Instructor Certificate 
  • 15 hours of pilot-in-command in applicable category
  • Pass written test
  • Pass oral and practical exam administered by a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)

Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII)

FAA Certified Flight Instructor Rating requirements:
  • Hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate (in applicable category - helicopter or airplane) or  hold an Airline Transport Pilot certificate (ATP)  
  • 15 hours of pilot-in-command in applicable category
  • Pass written exam
  • Pass oral and practical exam administered by a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)

Advanced Training

 Advanced Prerequisites:
  • Hold an Commercial Flight Certificate (in applicable category - helicopter or airplane) or  hold an Airline Transport Pilot certificate (ATP)
